Understanding Momme Count

In the world of silk, we often refer to momme (mm) as a measure of fabric quality and density. Momme indicates the density of silk fabric and is influenced by thread counts. The higher the thread count, the more durable the fabric, albeit at a higher cost.

  • 1MM = 4.3056 grams per square meter
  • 16MM = 69 grams per square meter
  • 19MM = 82 grams per square meter
  • 22MM = 95 grams per square meter
  • 25MM = 108 grams per square meter

Higher momme weights signify more luxurious fabric. However, the suitability of such thickness depends on the type of silk product. For instance, lightweight 16mm silk is ideal for scarves, while 19mm and 22mm are perfect for sleepwear and clothing. Using 25mm silk for sleepwear may be too heavy for comfort, while 16mm is too sheer for clothing and less durable. Therefore, choosing the right momme is a crucial consideration for each silk product.

Types of Silk Weaves

There are six distinct weaving methods for silk:

  1. Charmeuse Silk: Known for its lustrous front and dull back, charmuse silk is suitable for products like pillowcases and covers that don't require both sides to be showcased.

  2. Crêpe de Chine: Created by twisting delicate silk threads in various directions, crêpe de chine is wrinkle-free and versatile. It's suitable for both formal and casual wear.

  3. Silk Georgette: This lightweight, sheer fabric features a crinkled texture, making it ideal for blouses, dresses, and luxurious evening wear.

  4. Dupion Silk: Produced by two silkworms spinning cocoon together, dupion silk has a rough yarn texture, making it stronger than most other silks. It is commonly used in Indian traditional wear and scarves.

  5. Chiffon Silk: A matte, extremely lightweight fabric with a transparent quality, chiffon silk is soft, elastic, breathable, and comfortable.

  6. Habotai Silk: Recognized as the 'classic' silk fabric, habotai silk boasts a velvety and lightweight texture with a smooth surface. It is frequently used in creating scarves.

Silk Care: Hand Washing

For optimal silk care:

  1. Fill a sink or bucket with cold water at around 30 degrees.

  2. Add a small amount of silk-friendly detergent to the cool water.

  3. Soak the silk item for 5 to 10 minutes (avoid soaking for more than 30 minutes).

  4. Rinse thoroughly with cold water until all detergent is removed.

  5. Gently press the item dry between a clean towel or using your hands to remove excess water. Avoid twisting the silk, as it may damage the fabric.

  6. Hang the item to dry or lay it flat, preferably on a towel. Avoid direct sunlight exposure to prevent fabric damage or color changes.

  7. To restore the silk garment's sheen and softness, use a low-heat iron or steam to keep it wrinkle-free.
